Charlotte Mason (1842-1923) was a British educator and philosopher who invested her life in improving education for all children, regardless of social class. She believed that education is so much more than just what happens in a classroom. She taught that education shows us who we are, who God is, and how we connect to God and the world He created. “Education is an atmosphere, a discipline, and a life."
She recognized children as complete humans, capable of independent, intelligent thought, not simply empty receptacles to be filled with information. She fed their minds using living books, vital ideas, experiences, and nature, rather than dry facts. Charlotte Mason emphasized that teachers should provide materials, opportunities, and direction, but should not do the work of learning for the child.
Charlotte Mason describes her philosophy of education in her six volume book set, The Home Education Series, which, over a century after her death, continues to encourage us, challenge the way we think, and shape the way we train and educate, impacting the lives of thousands of children.
